As well as its cheese and strawberries, the village is famous for its magnificent gorge. 100,000 years ago, men settled in Cheddar, leaving traces of their campsites, cemeteries and flint tools: the gorge was a practical landmark and safe haven. Then, in Roman times, farms and a villa were built here. Around the 9th century, the area became a religious center and a royal forest, reserved for King Edmund's hunting. It wasn't until the 18th century that the gorge became the village's main attraction. Today, people also come here for climbing and caving.
