The north of the peninsula is undoubtedly the wildest part. The salt marshes on the edge of the Bristol Channel are teeming with wild horses, sheep and birds attracted by cockles, worms and crabs. The inhabitants of nearby villages such as Llanrhidian, Crofty and Welsh Moor have long made their living by collecting cockles on donkey backs. Until the early 20th century, it was the hub of a large weaving industry, now a paradise for birdwatchers, wildflower lovers and, if you're lucky, a rare species of butterfly, the Marbled White.
