Perched on a limestone hill, Rye has an undeniable charm. Its medieval buildings and narrow cobbled streets make it the cliché of a small British village. Rye is considered by many to be one of the best-preserved medieval villages in England, and spending a few hours here is sure to provide a change of scenery. Once almost completely encircled by the sea, its port is now just 800 m away. It reached its apogee in the 14th century, when it became one of the "Cinque Ports" that built ships for the defense of the kingdom. In the 18th century, Rye became a major center for wine and wool smuggling.
