Glastonbury lies on a plain that was once flooded. Its famous Tor Hill was a landmark and, according to legend, the gateway to Avalon in the Arthurian myth. The famous Celtic king and his wife Guinevere are said to have been buried nearby, on the site of the abbey, where their remains were moved and later lost. Tradition has it that, after the crucifixion, Joseph of Arimathea brought the Grail, containing the blood of Christ, here. Since then, the region has become a major pilgrimage center. Thanks to the establishment of the Glastonbury Festival in 1960, the village has become a popular venue for alternative culture.
