Polperro is one of Cornwall's most beautiful villages. Despite all the tourists, this small fishing port nestling at the bottom of a valley has retained its typical character. Winding lanes lined with colorful cottages, a house on stilts, Roman and Saxon bridges, Polperro is full of surprises that you'll discover if you stray a little from Fore Street, the main thoroughfare. In addition to fishing, Polperro was also a hotbed of smuggling. Indeed, before the construction of the New Road (1845), the village was fairly isolated. Zephaniah Job was the leader of the gang, and owned the port. Smuggling was called "fair trade"!
