The birthplace of the English navy, Plymouth is famous for having seen Drake, Cook and Darwin undertake their famous sea voyages. It was also from here that the first immigrants set sail for the New World, as evidenced by the Mayflower Stone and Steps plaque near the lighthouse. Plymouth Hoe represents the heart of the historic city, and legend has it that Sir Francis Drake waited here patiently for the Invincible Armada as he finished his game of bowls. Unfortunately, the town suffered greatly during the Second World War, and much of it had to be rebuilt. Don't miss a stroll through the Barbican district.
