It is the most important English fortress built in the seventeenth century to protect itself, once is not customary, against a Dutch and not French threat. The fortress encompasses the site of the previous fort built by Sir Francis Drake in 1590, including the Royal Chapel of St Katherine. Today, the 29th Royal Artillery Commando occupies the site. Due to the nature of this still operational military establishment, visits may be suspended or cancelled without notice.
