Built by the Romans and developed by the Normans, Rochester is the historic heart of the Medway conurbation, named after the river that runs through it and groups it with its neighbors Chatham, Strood, Gillingham and Rainham. The writer Charles Dickens spent some of the best years of his childhood here. A small corner of provincial England very close to London, with pleasant lanes, a beautiful castle and a delightful cathedral. Chatham Historic Dockyard was also the port of call for Francis Drake and Admiral Nelson, who sailed the Medway River estuary.
