Here we discover the history of the Hulks, prison pontoons created in the 18th and 19th centuries in former ships, to make up for the lack of space in English penitentiaries. As wars were numerous at the time, many prisoners, mainly French and American, were held in these floating gaols. Their living conditions are recounted here with the help of a highly instructive reconstruction. The museum also depicts Rochester Castle under siege in 1218, and recounts Dickens's childhood in the area.
