ROCHESTER CASTLE
This typically imposing Norman military castle was originally built of wood, like most of its Kent counterparts. Completely rebuilt in stone around 1088, King John managed to demolish part of it during the siege of 1215. But it's still in excellent condition, and is a beautiful place steeped in history. A symbol of ancient medieval power, it is the tallest keep of its kind still preserved in Europe. Numerous events take place at the foot of the castle throughout the year, including the Christmas market and festivals.
