Situated in the last kilometers of the Volturno's course, before it enters Campania, Venafro is a charming little village at the foot of Monte Croce. Alongside the medieval structure, some elements of the urban structure of the Roman period have been preserved: the remains of a theater and some other buildings can be seen. Conquered in 217 B.C. by Hannibal, celebrated as a vacation spot by Roman authors such as Cicero, Orace and Pliny, and established as a municipality in the first century B.C., the village of Venafro was an important link in the defense system of the upper Volturno valley in the Middle Ages.
