Bigger than the National Park of Abruzzo, the Maiella Park is just as interesting. According to a legend, the goddess Maia died lying down and her petrified body gave its shape to this long massif. The rich Mediterranean and mountain flora that makes up the park includes many species of endemic flowers. The preserved fauna is also of incomparable diversity: bears, wolves, chamois, golden eagles... The hermitages clinging to the mountain, among them that of San Onofrio, are also worth seeing. Hiking is certainly the best way to see the most beautiful landscapes of the Maiella National Park.
