Surrounded by mountains, Skopje stretches for over 30 km along the Vardar River. On the left bank of the river, the old town (Stara Čaršija or simply Čaršija) has preserved its minarets and the domes of its ancient hammams. On the right bank, blocks of flats and concrete towers have sprung up along straight avenues where greenery is never totally absent: wide avenues, parks and wooded squares all contribute to making life more pleasant. The main political institutions, as well as banks, the railway station and the embassy district, are grouped together on the city's right bank.Public transport. To/from Veles: 1h. To/from Kumonovo: 30 min.
