The city is known by two names: Pejë/Peja (pronounced "pé-ya") in Albanian, Пећ/Peć (pronounced "petch") in Serbian. It has a population of about 49,000, of which 91% are Albanians, 4% Roma and Ashkalis, 4% Bosnians. It is the capital of the municipality (96,000 inhabitants) and district (174,000 inhabitants) of Peja/Peć. It is located 5 km east of the Albanian Alps National Park, 37 km northwest of Gjakova/Đakovica, 47 km southeast of Rožaje (in Montenegro), 83 km west of Pristina. Guarding the entrance to the beautiful Rugova Valley, Peja/Peć richly deserves its reputation as the "tourism capital" of Kosovo. Admittedly, it does not have the beauty of Prizren: the heart of the old town (the old charchia) was largely destroyed by Yugoslav forces and Albanian independence fighters during the Kosovo war, and then completely rebuilt since 2016. But the area around Peja/Peć has the richest places to visit in the country: the Albanian Alps National Park (which encompasses the Rugova Valley) and two medieval Serbian Orthodox monasteries listed as Unesco World Heritage Sites, Peć and Dečani. One can easily spend a short week here as there is so much to do and see. Especially since the largest city in western Kosovo has an additional asset: a real tourist office, dynamic, offering plenty of activities and open every day, with an office in the city center and another at the entrance to the valley of Rugova. It is impossible to find better elsewhere.
