Mount Vodno/Водно rises southwest of Skopje to an altitude of 1,066m. On its northern flank and summit are two recreation areas. Halfway up the slope, the Sdreno Vodno area lies 7 km south of Skopje city center. It can be reached by bus no. 25. Sdreno Vodno is the starting point for the cable car to the Krstovar recreation area at the summit. The latter is also served by a road (closed to cars) and lies 12 km south-west of Skopje city center. From the Krstovar peak, at the top of Mount Vodno, you can enjoy the most beautiful views of the Skopje region, but also of two large buildings which, unfortunately, spoil the scenery. The country's largest Orthodox cross (66 m) and tallest tower (155 m) have been erected on top of this isolated minimassif. From the center of Skopje, these two much-maligned landmarks may seem tiny. But when you take the cable car to the top, they grow ominously until they seem to occupy the whole space. The disappointment is short-lived. The panorama across the Vardar valley to Kosovo is truly breathtaking. On its northern flank, near Gorno Nerezi (population 180, 60% Albanian), Mount Vodno also boasts the precious Church of St. Panteleimon de Nerezi, with its exceptional 12th-century frescoes. One regret, however: by mid-2023, there were no longer any accommodations or good restaurants on this touristy mountain.
