It is one of the magical cities of the Italian Renaissance, the laboratory of utopia, says the writer Paolo Volponi. Urbino experienced an extraordinary development from the 12th century onwards, with the Montefeltro family. Its peak was reached during the reign of Federico di Montefeltro (1444-1482), a humanist who made it one of the centers of the 15th century Renaissance. The Palazzo Ducale, the work of the architect Luciano Luarana, is an extraordinary building in which the most famous artists of their time participated, such as Piero della Francesca, Paolo Ucello and Sandro Botticelli. Urbino entered the Papal States in 1632 and only left in 1860.
