Gradara is surrounded by walls overlooking the Adriatic. The imposing fortress was once the residence of the Malatesta family, who were fond of crenellations, before it passed into the hands of the powerful Sforza family, who improved the place into a real luxury residence. Lucrezia Borgia lived here for three years after her marriage to Giovanni Sforza (1493). The fortress, now owned by the Italian state, contains within its walls works of art such as a splendid Madonna by Giovanni Santi (Raphael's father). Gradara is also known for the passionate love story between Paolo and Francesca, sung by Dante in the Divine Comedy.
