The name of this town comes from PIo ENea SAenens (Pius II). Its location in the heart of the Orcia Valley is a perfect illustration of the interest that 15th century Italian architecture had in the relationship between man and nature. The city was revealed when the future Pope Pius II was born here. In 1459, he raised his native village to the rank of episcopal city under the name of Pienza. Major works followed, including a cathedral and a papal palace, led by the architect Rossellino Pienza is also the capital of pecorino cheese, one of the Tuscan specialities, celebrated on the first Sunday in September during the Cheese Fair.
