Urbania is an unforgettable place, located 20 kilometres from Urbino. The town had its heyday during the Renaissance, when the lords of Montefeltro came to rest here. The land took its present name in 1636 in honour of Pope Urban VIII, who elevated it to the rank of city and made it a diocese "for the civility of its inhabitants and the beauty of the place". The Palazzo Ducale, built in the 13th century by the Brancaleonis, was restored by Francesco di Giorgio Martini. The break between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance is striking here: on the one hand a fierce fortress, and on the other the luxury of a palace open to the world
