Between Venice and Trieste, this elegant and reserved city unfolds around an interesting historical center, one of whose jewels is the Venetian-inspired Piazza della Libertà, which is flanked by sumptuous palaces. Udine is home to treasures, from the castle that dominates the city to Piazza Matteotti, from the collections of Casa Cavazzini to the works of Giambattista Tiepolo. The clock tower of the castle is topped by statues, one representing a German, the other an Italian. From the 13th to the 15th century, the city was the residence of the patriarchs of Aquileia. At the foot of the castle, a lion of Saint Mark on a column reminds us that Udine belonged to Venice in the 15th century. In the 18th century it was the seat of the archbishopric. During the Napoleonic wars, Udine passed into the hands of Austria and became Italian only in 1866. Also worth seeing are the cathedral, the diocesan museum and the museum of modern and contemporary art. It is also necessary to sit on the terrace of one of the cafés to appreciate the atmosphere of this peaceful city.
