For those who dream of a secluded, unspoilt beach, this is the place to mark your calendars. Princess Town also boasts a fort open to visitors. It was built on the site of a Danish pavilion dating back to 1658. Originally called Groot Friedrichsburg by the Dutch, who built it in 1683, Fort Princess Town was one of the finest on the coast at the time, with its monumental gateway and impressive bell tower. After 35 years of occupation, they abandoned it, leaving it in the hands of an astute gold trader, John Conny, who was the village chief. The Dutch re-invested it in 1725 and renamed it Fort Hollandia, after which it became a minor trading post until 1872, when it was ceded to the English. A few rudimentary rooms in the fort are usually rented to visitors for the night. Not far away is Miemia beach, reputed to be one of the best surfing spots on the entire Ghanaian coast. It operates mainly in April and May and during September, October and November. But be sure to ask the locals about it, so you don't end up traveling for nothing. To get there, simply turn left after the police barrier between Busua and Axim.If you don't have a car, the easiest way to get to Princess Town or Miemia is to hire a cab.
