This city of 215,000 inhabitants lies at the confluence of the Danube, Siret and Prut rivers, at the southernmost tip of Moldavia. Galaţi is the Romanian capital of the metallurgical industry. It is also a major shipbuilding center and, thanks to its position on the Danube, a major port. For all these reasons, it came under heavy bombardment during the Second World War. Needless to say, the city is not overflowing with major tourist attractions and may even appear to some as particularly off-putting... Nevertheless, in the city center, which contrasts sharply with the vast suburbs of concrete buildings, you'll find a few historical relics. Small but lively, it is structured around Strada Domnească, which is partly pedestrianized.
