A possible stopover on the delta route. Although surrounded by Communist block districts, this city of 155,000 inhabitants boasts an interesting 19th-century historic center, a vestige of the city's golden age, when its port saw the transit of much of the country's goods. It attracted merchants from all over Europe, mainly Greeks, who erected superb buildings and mansions, some of which have since fallen into disrepair. You only have to look at a plan of the city to understand how well planned its development was: around the river port and the center, parallel boulevards form a neat semicircle.
