The capital of the județ de l'Olt, with a population of 63,000, is not a city that particularly attracts attention. Its museum, however, contains interesting archaeological and historical exhibits from various periods. It is also the birthplace of the master of the absurd, Eugène Ionesco (1912-1994). Nearby Brâncoveni (8 km south-west of the city) is the birthplace of Matei Basarab and Constantin Brâncoveanu, two important figures in Romanian history. Here you can visit a 16th-century monastery.
