More easily accessible from the north of the lake, Ceahlău, a village of 2,000 inhabitants, stretches along the Schitu River. It boasts a beautiful 18th-century wooden church. Nearby, the tourist resort of Durău lies in the middle of the forest, at an altitude of 800 meters. It is home to a 17th-century monastery, where accommodation is available. Of the many hikes available, the easiest is the 2-3-hour walk to the Fântânele clearing. From there, in 6 hours, you can reach Chalet Dochia by two routes: via the beautiful Duruitoarea waterfalls or around the Toaca peak along a superb path.
