Located on the right bank of the river of the same name, the city of Suceava (84,000 inhabitants) was Moldavia's capital from the reign of Petru II Muşat (1375-1391) until 1566, when Alexandru Lăpuşneanu transferred it to Iaşi. Nevertheless, virtually nothing remains of this glorious past. Today, the city is industrial and polluted, and while for most visitors it represents the gateway to the monasteries of Bucovina, we strongly recommend that you go deeper to enjoy the natural charms of the region. If you do stop off, you'll still find some interesting monuments: the Mirăuţi church, where Moldavian princes were once crowned, the monasteries of Dragomirna and St. John the New, the village museum... Not to mention the remains of its fortress, reputed to be impregnable.
