At the crossroads of Moldavia and Transylvania, equidistant from Suceava, Piatra Neamț, Bistriţa and Maramureș, this spa town of almost 12,600 inhabitants exudes old-fashioned charm. Situated at an altitude of over 800 m, sheltered from strong winds and surrounded by conifer-covered mountains, it enjoys an invigorating climate. Its thermal waters are renowned, and the first bathing establishment was opened here in 1845. The famous Dorna mineral water is produced here. Vatra Dornei is also a winter sports resort and can be a departure point for the Rarău and Călimani mountains. The surrounding scenery is superb, including the road to the Prislop pass, towards Maramureş, and Route 17 B to Piatra Neamţ, which crosses the Ceahlău mountains.
