Things to see and do Vatra Dornei

To the south of Vatra Dornei, in the natural park of the mountains Călimani, is the superb geological reserve of the Twelve Apostles (Rezervaţia Doisprezece Apostoli). Its strangely shaped volcanic rocks, sculpted by erosion, sometimes evoke human figures, sometimes dragons and other fantastic creatures. You can reach it from the village of Neagra Șarului, by a hike of about 3 hours (marking: red dot) or from Gura Haitii, in about 2h30 (blue dot).

From its success during the Austro-Hungarian period, the spa has retained some fine ^19th-century houses and attractive buildings, such as the Vieux Palais des Bains (1898), the Palais Unirea and the casino (both 1896), the railway station (1902) and a beautiful Moorish-style synagogue. Its vast park, laid out in 1862, is planted with beech and fir trees, amid which gushes a mineral spring, marked by a castle-like building. Finally, the town boasts an interesting ethnographic museum (strada Eminescu 17, Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
