This small town of 16,000 inhabitants lies at an altitude of 630 meters, in the midst of a charming landscape. Although it is less picturesque than the pretty surrounding villages, it is a convenient base for visiting the monasteries, especially for those without motorized transport. The town retains a few vestiges of its Austrian past, in the form of villas and official buildings, such as the one housing the Museum of Wood Art (Calea Transilvaniei, no. 10, Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., admission €2.40). You can also visit a private ethnographic collection at Rue Vornic Grigore Sabie no. 19 (+40 722 680 691), a veritable bric-a-brac of antique objects.
