Târgu Lăpuş, the main town (11,000 inhabitants) in South Maramureş, has many guesthouses, which can make it a good base. There are a number of interesting sites in the surrounding area. In Rohia, to the south, you can see a 14th-century monastery and its modern church (1924). There's also an exhibition of icons on wood and glass from the 18th and 19th centuries. To the east, in Rogoz, you'll find a superb wooden church dating from 1600, burnt down by the Tatars and rebuilt after 1717. The Lăpuş river flows through the region, offering superb scenery, especially in the upper reaches.Nearby. Rogoz boasts a superb wooden church dating from 1600, burnt down by the Tatars and rebuilt after 1717. Cupşeni, further north, has a number of small churches, but people come here above all for its charm and isolation, which make it a true epinal image of Maramureş. Other churches can be seen, more or less pretty, in Inău, Dămăcuşeni, Răzoare or Lăpuş among others. The villages are interesting to explore in any case. Running through the region, the Lăpuş river offers superb scenery, particularly in the upper reaches of its course as well as in its stretch between Remetea Chioarului and Groape. Unfortunately, however, there are no roads that follow it, so you'll have to make do with crossing its path.
