Ciuc is the name of the depression in which this small town of 34,000 inhabitants is located, giving it a colder climate than the rest of the country. The capital of the Harghita județ, the town itself isn't exactly beautiful. Most of the signs you'll see and conversations you'll overhear will be in Hungarian. The surrounding area abounds in villages with typical Sicilian houses, such as Misentea and Leliceni, craft centers like Dănești and Sâncrăieni and spas, such as Jigodin-Băi and Harghita-Băi.
