In the centre of Imbo plain, the city of Bujumbura is located at the northeastern tip of Lake Tanganyika and extends between the shores of the lake and the first slopes of the Mirwa Mountains, which dominate it in the east. Seen from the sky, the capital appears a little crushed in this geographical configuration and it is clear that its expansion is constrained by the mountain foothills on one side and the calm waters of the lake on the other. With the exception of the built heights of Vugizo, which can be found by the imposing building of the campus Kiriri and the steeple of its church (former college of the Holy Spirit), most of the districts are located in the lower part of the site, between 770 m and 850 m above sea level. Their growth is therefore carried out by the north or the south, beyond the Ntahangwa and Muha rivers which have long formed the natural limits of the urban site and its symbolic borders, particularly during the war.«Buja», as it is known, is undoubtedly a charming capital, which has been for many years - and has returned since the return to peace - a privileged holiday place for Burundian executives from within the country, residents of neighbouring countries and Westerners, many of the humanitarian ngos or international organizations working in Burundi. The attractions of the city are indisputable, starting with its sunshine and warm climate, which can be enjoyed on the northern sand beaches of the lake, or sitting in a cabaret. Its atmosphere is also unique: We can pass here, without transition, from the noisy atmosphere of the urban markets and the rush of bus stations to the tranquillity of the shores of the lake or to the tranquillity of the approaches of the cossues villas. Buja sounds shape a particular sound universe: horns, conversations, laughter, whistles, music distilled by dying appliances, listening to tue information on tiny radio stations… Its silence is also a pleasure to stroll through, in its quiet avenues where the guards of beautiful tree-lined plots (a small seaside resort in low season), or on the lake where only the wind and birds disturb the tranquillity.
