THE PLACE OF INDEPENDENCE
Bordered by the streets of Independence, Freedom and Trade, this triangular square once included a monument to the colours of national flags and the Unity, commemorating the proclamation of Independence on 1 July 1962. But on the occasion of the celebrations for the fiftieth anniversary of this event, a new monument was created, which created controversy. Indeed, a bust of the hero of Independence, Louis Rwagasore, was shaped by a Chinese sculptor but under the traits of an old man, while Rwagasore was murdered at 29 years old! The scandal was such that the bust had long been covered with a sheet. Today the place is clotûrée and the names of the 17 provinces are registered. It is the place of Independence that many cultural, social or political manifestations are leaving.
