Mabayi is the typical example of an isolated locality by its difficult topography (here at altitudes never less than 2 200 m). As it is located very close to the Kibira National Park (with Mount Twinyoni, which culminates at 2 659 m above sea level, within 10 km of a bird's flight), where armed rebels found refuge during the war, and as it is at the door of the domaine de la, renowned for its gold resources and its underground riches (coltan, cassiterite), the locality has seen the development of a particular economy, particularly smuggling. It is very clear, by stopping, that Mabayi is at the entrance to a world profoundly scarred by the conflict, even though renewed animation, linked to pacification and exchanges with neighbouring Rwanda (which is reached by a runway 12 km north of Mabayi, by Ruhororo) has been observable since the late 2000 s. The market has picked up colours and we now find cabarets and shops.
