The city is nestled between hills and lagoons, a mixture that gives superb views every meter you walk! One of the curiosities is certainly this long circular one-way street which forces you to go around again if you realize that you forgot your suitcase at the hotel. Hotels have pushed here and there, always on a human scale and very complementary in their offers. Many visitors combine a stay in Kibuye with trips to nearby islands, such as Napoleon Island. There is something for everyone: from simple swimming to windsurfing, water skiing, sailing, diving and deep-sea fishing... Far from mass tourism, Kibuye and its islands are ideal places to relax after a safari or a gorilla excursion. This soothing beauty cannot make you forget that the prefecture experienced one of the worst pages of the 1994 genocide, with tens of thousands of Tutsis massacred. For example, near the stadium, a sign indicates that "more than 10,000 people were buried here". In the church overlooking the city, 4,000 Tutsis had taken refuge. The punishment was lost: a crowd of drunken killers wiped them out with grenades and machetes. The church became a memorial to the genocide. As the years passed, new generations emerged. Children with their laughter remind us that life always takes over.
