Yeongwol, far from being a tourist destination, is most famous for the fateful fate of King Danjong. In 1452, Prince Hong-wi became King Danjong. 10 years later, his power-hungry uncle, the future King Sejo, put him under such pressure that the young sovereign abdicated. Danjong was then exiled to Yeongwol. But rumors that a conspiracy was being hatched reached the ears of the usurper. He ordered that poor 16-year-old Danjong be poisoned. Yeongwol celebrates the Danjong Culture Festival every year.By bus. From Seoul (Dongseoul), 1 bus per hour (between 8am and 10pm). Allow 2h30 for 14,000 won.
