Located south-east of Seoul, Cheongju may not immediately stand out for its exuberance. However, its past reveals a certain military importance, epitomized by the Sangdangsanseong fortress. The city also stands out as the cradle of printing. It was here, in 1337, that the first book, the Jikji, was printed. Its history can be discovered at the city's printing museum. This is also where you'll find Beopjusa, one of the country's most famous temples, with its huge Buddha statue. Also worth a visit is the Suamgol village, made up of painted walls offering a breathtaking view of the city.
