The pleasant little town of Gongju has a very important history. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Baekje from 475 to 538. This city (not to be confused with Gyeongju, capital of Silla), is full of treasures. These jewels of the past include the magnificent Gongsanseong Fortress and royal tombs, including that of King Muryeong. But the origin of this city is even more distant, since there are settlements in the vicinity dating back 20,000 to 30,000 years. Some artifacts can be seen at the National Museum of the city.
