La Crosse is located east of Madison, on the east bank of the Mississippi River. The history of this small town, built below cliffs carved by the river crossing, begins with the fur trade of Nathan Myrick in the 1840s. Then, favoured by its geographical situation, it becomes a major centre for transporting wood by river. The arrival of the train will gradually reduce the transport by boat. Today, the city is a major university centre with specialities in medicine and medical research. People come here to discover the Mississippi, its steamboat (one of the last to sail the river), and to stroll through the historic district of La Crosse.
