Dodgeville was founded in 1827. At that time, iron ore mining was the only activity of its inhabitants. Until 1833, the cost of production as well as the fear of the Amerindians did not allow a marked growth of the population. From 1833 until the discovery of gold in California in 1849, the extraction of ore was in full swing. Then the race for El Dorado changed Dodgeville's fate. In 1849, only a few miners remained and continued to work in the mines. Today, underground work has ceased in favor of an economy based on agriculture and manufacturing
