This is where Wisconsin's history began, where Colonel Henry Dodge, the hero of many battles against the Indian population, was appointed the first governor of the state of Wisconsin. Beginning in 1827, when the first residents settled here, Mineral Point quickly became the center of the local lead trade. So much digging was done that the site was likened to a badger hole, giving Wisconsin its nickname. The miners, originally from Cornwall, England, brought with them their skills and their style of building houses, an architecture of stone and wood that can be discovered by walking along the small main street.
