Self-proclaimed "America's Little Switzerland", New Glarus cultivates its Swiss heritage to the extreme: from alpine chalets to cheese fondue restaurants to cuckoo clock shops. New Glarus's surroundings are strongly reminiscent of Switzerland, with its cows grazing peacefully in the meadows and its beautifully tended hilly fields. The main attraction of the village is the "Swiss Village", close to the centre, which reconstructs the life of the Swiss pioneers who came from the original Glarus to settle here in the 1850s. New Glarus is also the home of the "New Glarus Spotted Cow", a beer sold only in Wisconsin
