Galena - named after a type of lead that was abundant in the area - became the first mining town in Kansas in 1877. Life there was very hard and Main Street was then called Red Hot Street: saloons and brothels were open 24 hours a day. Today, the population is only 3,000 and the streets are empty. The main points of interest in Galena are the Cars on the Route (formerly 4 Women on the Route), a boutique-snack store located in an old gas station; the Galena Murder Bordello, a brothel that became a museum and now an antique museum; and the Galena Mining & Historical Museum.
