In 1604, Samuel de Champlain and Pierre Dugua de Mons discovered the region and named the entire basin "Port-Royal". In 1605, the region became the first permanent French settlement in the New World and remained the military and administrative center of Acadia until its capture by the English in 1710. Then renamed Annapolis, in honor of Queen Anne Stuart, the city remained the capital of Nova Scotia until the founding of Halifax in 1749. Today, the old name and the new one have merged to become Annapolis Royal. Fort Anne, Canada's oldest national historic site, details the history of this place.
