Located on the northeast side of the Avalon Peninsula, facing the Atlantic Ocean, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador (population just over 210,000 in the metropolitan area) is one of the oldest cities in North America. Its historic harbour occupies a well-protected harbour in a spectacular setting. The Venetian explorer John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto) is said to have entered the harbour on St. John's Day in 1497, hence the name of the city. In addition to the provincial museum The Rooms and the historic site of Signal Hill, the old town is a must-see. The busiest streets are Water, Duckworth and George Streets.
