It is customary to regroup under the generic name of Carrefour all areas between Martissant and Mariani on both sides of the Grand-Rue (Fontamara, Bizoton, Thor, Arcachon, Bon Repos, Wayney, Of, etc.). Formerly named Carrefour-Truitier, Carrefour remained far away from the hustle and bustle of the capital, even in the 1920 s and 1930 s, a holiday destination for the Port aux Princiens.Intense urbanization over the last four decades has transformed it into a suburb, overcrowded, a nightmare of motorists. A forced passage to the south, vehicles from Jacmel, Cayes, Jérémie and other regions combine local traffic to form the most spectacular blockades (bouchons) of the country. Pedestrians are also legion, at peak times in the slums hanging in the mountains.
