Located north of Castro, on the shores of the gulf, Ancud offers a touching and more peaceful panorama than the rest of the island. Its name comes from the Mapudungún language and means "fertile land". A terrible tidal wave devastated the port in 1960 and destroyed almost all the houses on stilts. The city, a bit shunned today by tourists, has a more authentic atmosphere than its southern rival. One stays there with pleasure to discover a typical Chiloe atmosphere. The Chilean writer Subercaseaux, described there a " rain which falls eternally understanding on the worries ": one will then easily forgive the weather!
