It is a small town lost on the high plateau, towards the Armenian border, where you can explore the Paravani, Kartskhati or Khantchali lakes. There are some marchroutky from Akhalkalaki. Doukhobors, a Russian sect of old believers (Orthodox who refused to reform the church), were exiled here in the 19th century. They founded the city under the name Bogdanovka. After independence, the Georgian state renamed the city Ninotsminda, "Saint Nino", because it is through there that Nino would have entered Georgia to evangelize Mtskheta. The surroundings of Ninotsminda offer great opportunities for beautiful day treks
