The hills streaked with vineyards surrounding the monastery offer a superb picture. It can be seen from afar: its bell tower has dominated the landscape for more than a century. The site is imposing. Dating from the early 11th century, the cathedral reflects the prosperity of the kingdom, which was then at its height. It is a magnificent example of a page of Georgian history in its own right. Surrounded by an imposing wall, the ensemble evokes a fortress. Wine is also produced here. The monastery has vineyards cultivated by the monks since the 6th century, when the monastic complex was founded. Wine was first and foremost the prerogative of the Orthodox clergy, at the beginning of Christianity in Georgia, for the liturgy. What a beautiful tribute to the divine during the ceremonies! Its name Allah Verdi, in Arabic, means "church of the confines". This cathedral is bewitching. The buildings seem to resist the ravages of time more than ever. When you enter the site through the imposing walls, you may feel as if you are going back in time. Be careful, at the entrance, you will be checked to make sure that you are dressed correctly to visit the site. We're not kidding about that! Remember that shorts and bare shoulders are not appropriate for either men or women. Women, even in trousers, will have to cover their legs with a cloth, as well as their hair. Photos are forbidden. Before entering the cathedral, you will walk along the vineyards with which the monks produce their wine. The complex also includes, on your left, the former palace of the Persian governor Shah Abbas, now the residence of the prior, and the wine cellars.
