1 km after Tsounda, on the other side of the Koura, a fortress rises. The fortress of Tmogvi is located on a rocky promontory surrounded by a canyon formed by the Koura. It's a real eagle's nest. The fortress entered history in the 9th century. It controlled one of the major trade routes linking Georgia to the countries of Asia Minor. Built on a crucial geostrategic site, it was a particularly important military post in the region. It has a long history: it was taken successively by the Arabs in 914, various powerful Georgian families, the Ottomans and the Russians, before falling into oblivion. A site off the beaten track.
